Online Materials - Safari Database and Lynda.com Tutorials

CGT 353 students must access two primary sources of external information; the Safari Books Online Database and Lynda.com.

Both resources provide a cost-effective and efficient means of absorbing many elements of the course material. All students are required to use these resources as part of the class.

Failure to properly utlize these materials will likely result in poor perfromance and possible failure of the course. If you have any questions or difficulty accessing any of these resources, contact your instructor immediately.

Safari Books Online

The Safari Books Online Database (SBOD) can be accessed freely by students and staff through the Purdue University library system.

Instructions:

  1. Go to the Purdue Library page at www.lib.purdue.edu
  2. Click the "Databases" tab.
  3. Scroll down the "Select a Database" menu to "Safari Tech Books Online" and click the "Go" button.
  4. On the login screen that appears, enter your Career Account login and password and click "Login"
  5. Once inside, search for or navigate to the particular materials needed.

See the course syllabus for suggested resources.

Lynda.com Video Tutorials

Video tutorials at the Lynda.com site will be used for teaching certain hands-on elements of the material. Like the materials on the SBOD, the video tutorials on Lynda.com should be employed by students on a regular basis, and will in fact be assigned at regular intervals.

Students will register and login with a class code specifically assigned to them in a previous e-mail. Students should be protective of their class codes, as improper use will be subject to disciplinary and possibly even legal action.

Puchase and use of these videos is required ($39/ semester). The instructor will monitor each students use of the videos. Students who fail to watch the videos during specifically assigned period will be deducted points from their "Exercises and Assingments" portion of the class.

Instructions:

  1. Open your Web browser and navigate to http://www.lynda.com/edu-media
  2. In the fields labeled "OTL Academic Student Registration" enter the class code you were e-mailed followed by your e-mail address and click register.
  3. Follow the registration process detailed on the subsequent pages.
  4. After registering, students can login to Lynda.com using the standard login fields at the top left of the Lynda.com home page.
