Biography

James L. Mohler is Associate Department Head and Professor of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University, where he received his B.S. in Technical Graphics. Dr. Mohler has been teaching in various capacities since 1991. James served as a Senior Research Scientist of Multimedia and Web Development from 2002-2005, where he was involved with Information Technology at Purdue (IT@P) as well as the Envision Center for Data Perceptualization. Dr. Mohler is a Purdue University Faculty Scholar, a faculty fellow for the Discovery Learning Center, a member of the Purdue University Teaching Academy and a faculty fellow at Owen Hall. He also serves as CGT's Graduate Program Coordinator as part of his administrative duties.

As a faculty member, James has been the recipient of several teaching awards at various levels within the university including the Purdue University Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in memory of Charles B. Murphy in 2002, James D. Dwyer Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in the School of Technology in 1998, the Outstanding Untenured Faculty Member award in 1998, and the Purdue University Teaching for Tomorrow award in 2000. He also received the Frank Oppenheimer Award for best paper presentation at the Engineering Design Graphics Division Mid-year meeting in 1996. James is listed in the Book of Great Teachers at Purdue University and currently serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee for the Purdue University Teaching Academy.

Dr. Mohler has authored, co-authored, or contributed to over a 21 texts related to computer graphics, multimedia, and hypermedia development. One of his books was noted on Amazon's top 10 graphic titles for year 2000. Dr. Mohler has enjoyed presenting over 60 papers and workshops at various conferences including international presentations in Austria, England, Finland, Portugal, and Russia. He has also authored over 52 articles for academic and trade publications. Currently James is working closely with Harbin Institute of Technology in China, delivering a co-coordinated course and continuing to develop opportunities for students and faculty to study abroad.

James has served on the review board of the WebNet Journal and as the Executive Editor for the Journal of Interactive Instruction Development. James is a member of ACM, ACM SIGGRAPH, IEEE, and ASEE. James is currently the SIGGRAPH 2010 Director for Education. He was the Educators Program Chair for the SIGGRAPH 2002 conference and actively participates on the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee. He also served as the SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Chair.

Dr. Mohler continues active industrial involvement through external consulting as his time permits, including work performed for companies such as AutoDesk, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Caterpillar, Cummins Engine Company, Electronic Arts, Fairfield Manufacturing Company, GM Powertrain, McGraw-Hill Publishers, Macmillan Computer Publishing, Purdue University, Rockwell Automation, and State Farm Insurance.
