Computing resources available to students (server space, email, web space, laboratories, etc.) are provided by the central, university-level computing organization (called ITaP) and smaller school or college computing organizations. As a student, often both ITaP and the school or college units will provide similar (or the same resources) to you simultaneously.
If you are in the College of Technology, you have access to two sets of resources: (1) those provided by the university (ITaP) and (2) those provided by the College of Technology. In addition, both of these organizations operate computer labs on campus. Labs in Knoy Hall of Technology are run by the College of Technology's IT organization called Technology Computer Network [TCN]. Many of the computing labs in other parts of the university are run by ITaP (the central IT organization).
This document is designed to give you (1) a run-down of what is offered by who and (2) links to how to access these resources.
Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) Resources
ITaP (the central IT organization) provides:
- A career account login and password (this was created for you when you registered at Purdue); this is your "global" Purdue login and password.
- Email
- Laboratories across campus (these are generally computer labs outside of Knoy)
- ITaP/ICS Storage space (home directory) ; as part of this space, you have a www directory that can be used to distribute files on the web.
- Note that when you login to an ITaP lab (sometimes called an ICS lab), the ITaP/ICS storage space (network drive) is mounted automatically and accessible to you (via My Computer icon). However College of Technology network drives ARE NOT automatically connected.
- To find out information about your storage space (called your home directory), as well as about personal web pages (the www directory inside your home directory), go to: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/careeraccount/webpage.cfm
- Additional information is also listed in the following two locations:
Other ITaP Resources to Be Aware Of...
- SSINFO is the student information system (where you can check things related to your schedule, check your grades at the end of the semester, and a whole host of other information relative to you.
- Software Remote (previously called DACS), allows you to run common software programs (that you don't have installed on your computer) via remote.
- BoilerCast is a service where.lectures are recorded and then posted online in various digital media streaming formats. You can listen to these on the web, or download them and put them on a digital music device. Not all courses are available (it is up to the instructor of the course).
- Air Link and VPN are related Purdue's wireless network on campus. VPN is also necessary (in most cases) if you are accessing (mounting drives, etc.) from off campus.
- RESNET has information about residence hall Internet access.
- While Professor Glotzbach does not use WebCT, many courses on campus do. To access WebCT for your other courses access ITaP's eCourses link.
- ITaP's Knowledge Base can be a helpful resource (it is essentially and online FAQ) relative to computing resources at Purdue
Technology Computer Network (TCN; the College of Technology IT organization) Resources
TCN provides the following resources:
- Logging In in Knoy Hall
- Logins in the College of Technology are synchronized with your Purdue career account. Thus, your Purdue career account should work in the College of Technology labs and for accessing College of Technology computing resources. If you have diffuculty logging onto TCN resources, go here: http://www.tech.purdue.edu/tcn/tcnaccounts/index.cfm
- Computer Labs in Knoy Hall.
- To find out information about these labs, go to: http://www.tech.purdue.edu/tcn/labinfo/index.cfm. Lab schedules and policies are listed there (as well as which labs are TCN labs).
- Note that when you login to an TCN lab in Knoy, the storage spaces (network drives) described in the next bullet are automatically mounted/accessible to you (via My Computer icon). However ITaP/ICS network drives ARE NOT automatically connected.
- Storage space on their servers. There are two types of storage space:
- Note that when you login to an TCN lab in Knoy, your TCN storage spaces (network drives) are automatically mounted/accessible to you (via My Computer icon). However ITaP/ICS network drives ARE NOT automatically connected.
- Your "H" drive is your personal server space (similar to the server space provided by ITaP). However, your "H" drive CANNOT be used to distribute web pages on the Web.
- The "G" drive (called the "classes drive"). Some courses in the College of Technology require that you submit your homework and other assignments into a course directory (most instructors call this a "drop box").
