Dia's first ride was on the back of her boyfriend Mark's chopper when she was still in junior high school. As things turned out, Mark became her husband, and Dia watched the countryside roll by from over Mark's shoulder. As the years passed, the chopper was replaced by a Fat Boy, which was to give way to an Ultra. All this time, sitting on the back was fine with Dia. However, she was also thinking that someday she would like to control her own handlebars. But being somewhat vertically challenged, Dia put her wish on the back burner,

never dreaming she could ride a Harley, but not wishing to settle for anything less.
When Christmas of 1998 rolled around, Mark surprised her with a two-wheeled present called a Sportster. Though Dia was delighted, the bike intimidated her. She couldn't touch the ground, let alone flatfoot the bike. Undaunted, she signed up and completed the ABATE safety course, anyway. Meanwhile, Mark went to work on the bike. He altered the suspension with a front fork lowering kit and shorter shocks, only to find Dia still on her tiptoes.
That first spring, Dia worked to overcome her fear of the bike and learn to ride skillfully. Unfortunately, later that year she also had to recover from an accident she and Mark had on his Ultra, which brought back her fear of the bike. No matter, she toughed it out anyway. That first riding season was short, and the bike went in for winter storage. Yet for Dia, even with the obstacles, the thrill of riding her own machine had touched her deeply and she wanted more.
That winter Mark set about making the bike more suitable for her. Today, Mark and Dia agree that what Mark envisioned and what Dia understood were two different things. Dia loved the look of a Fat Boy and wanted a short, squatty bike with fat tires and fenders. Mark didn't tell her that what she would be getting was a custom bike built to fit her size and desires. |
